Poet Laureate PROJECT SLC
For this project, students of Dr. Patton's class were given the task to design, edit and publish poems representing events from American History and present them at a coffee house in San Marcos, California. Each person was assigned a specific time period and had to select an event pertaining to it. The second part of the project was where each person was grouped together into different sub systems in order to prepare and advertise our poems which we would present at the Old California Coffee House and Eatery. My specific role was to help create a web site that would display poems made by the students, have information about the event including the location, about the class and where to buy our book. My time period was 1700-1750 and I chose to write an essay and poem about Carolina splitting into two separate colonies. Before I started this project I really didn't understand how to write poetry. I am proud of actually creating a poem about a major historic event in iambic pentameter. I remember best presenting to the class about why, how and when Carolina split into two colonies because this was the final benchmark of actually teaching the class about your findings. A couple lessons that I have learned from this project are to be better at time management and to always keep searching the web if you can't find information you are looking for. In the beginning of the process of creating my poem, I had absolutely no idea where to start. As time went on, I spent too much time of thinking of what form to write it in instead of what event I would actually write it about. Also, it was hard for me to find different forms of poetry and how to write them which also took up quite a bit of time to find out how to incorporate a specific form to fit my event. Both of these can have a direct relationship and transfer into college and future jobs.
