The Poet Laureate Project
For this project, students of Dr. Patton's class were given the task to design, edit and publish poems representing events from American History and present them at a coffee house in San Marcos, California. The students were split into separate groups who were in charge of different elements of our project such as Web Design, Publicity and Event planning. I was on the Web-Site team which created a Weebly site that displayed our poems (in a random you could view every students poem that was submitted from each class. My role on the team was to help input students poems via .xml and to create the Launch Party page on our website. This process was tedious but in the end, it all worked out. After all of our poems were completed and published we created and sold a book containing every students poem inside.
Reflection: Throughout this project I completed a poem, essay and power point all which talk about the Carolina Colony splitting into two separate colonies. I am most proud of my poem which I wrote in Iambic Pentameter. Reason being, is because I have never written actual poetry before this project and I feel that I succeeded, mainly because I met all requirements and included all the major
details of my event. The major details being proprietors land being taken over by colonists, Indian wars, Union vs. Confederates and political disputes. I remember my presentation best from this project because I had the opportunity to be able to share my findings about my event to my classmates. A few lessons that I learned through out this project were to keep organized and work efficiently.
We had a lot of online documents which could get un-organized very quickly so we just created a folder to keep them in. You needed to work quite fast in terms of completing your poem and essay because in my opinion we weren't given so much time to complete these. There were multiple drafts due at various times during the weeks. One transferrable skill that I know I can use later on in schooling would be poetry. I do not plan nor want to become a poet but I know that during 12th Grade and above we may be assigned to write a poem or something similar. This project will help me achieve that. Another skill that I can transfer would
be .xml formatting as I plan on doing something with computers and technology in the future.
